Forsaken By My Mate – Chapter 5

“And if she ever shows up again, I’ll agree to her demands and formally sever our Mate Bond. From then on, don’t involve me in her affairs again. I won’t abuse my power for her.”

I wished I could hear my father’s voice for a little longer–but Damon hung up the phone. I wanted my parents to stop being sad about me. I was not worth their tears. Unfortunately, nobody could hear me.

Damon cast a suspicious glance behind him. “Why do I keep feeling like a pair of eyes is watching me?”

His gaze stayed on my body for a while. He suddenly picked up a small bracelet from beneath a shard of broken bone.

I had not expected it to survive the explosion. My initials engraved on the pendant could still be seen, albeit faintly.

He gave me that bracelet the day we became friends. He should recognise it, right? One of his subordinates leaned in.

“Sir, is there something wrong with that bracelet?”

“It just… looks familiar.”

A female patrol officer looked at it and casually said, “That’s normal. It’s one of the cheapest styles in the local jewellery store.” Damon let go of the bracelet and returned to work. I let out a bitter laugh—how could I have forgotten?

The first time Damon and I slept together was unforgettable for me. But for him, it was simply the result of a drunken night.

The next morning, he casually stated that what had been done was complete, so he would mark me and become my mate. That was his way of accepting responsibility. As we left his house, he bought a random piece of jewellery from a street vendor and tossed it to me, claiming it was a symbol of our bond.

There was absolutely no sincerity. But for me, that bracelet was a prized possession. I never even wore it often, afraid of damaging it. I even had a custom pendant engraved with our initials to make it more special.

Clearly, I had overestimated my place in Damon’s heart. Now, all I wanted was for Damon to hurry up and get to the bottom of the case. As for whether he would regret everything when the truth came out, I no longer cared.

Maybe when the truth was finally revealed, my soul would be completely freed. After the case was publicised on Moondell’s missing persons network, some responses came in.

Several people came forward to report missing female wolves, but none of their DNA matched mine. The investigation came to a halt yet again.

Anthony paused for a moment before saying, “The case has made no progress. Let’s switch perspectives. What if we investigated the wolfsbane bomb the rogue made?”

The other officers nodded their agreement. “As far as I know, there aren’t many who know how to make that kind of bomb.” Anthony’s eyes lit up. “Oh, I know someone who might.”

He quickly organized a group and headed to the prison that held rogue werewolves. Before leaving, he invited Damon to join them.

They were going to find Adrian Taylor, a rogue Damon had apprehended years before for robbing people with homemade wolfsbane explosives.

Damon had handled the entire case and discovered indisputable evidence to convict him, and Adrian had held a grudge against him ever since.
