One of my subordinates leaned in and said, “Beta Zoe, the Alpha of the Starhollow pack brought the contract. Let’s go see it.”
“Alpha Ryder is also completely crazy. His pack is so small and weak. Why does he think we should spend time with him?”
I shrugged. My employees could see that, but Ryder couldn’t. He was a coward who couldn’t face the truth.
“Alpha John, it’s nice to work with you,” I said.
The Alpha of the Starhollow pack was a well-known tyrant, but his pack was very loyal and obedient to him. It would be easy to make an alliance with a pack like that.
“Your Alpha isn’t here. Is it because you think less of us?”John Thompson squinted his eyes and glared at me with clear anger.
“My father sent me to sign the contract right away because he trusts your pack. You see, he doesn’t need to come and check in person because of that trust.
John was happy with my reassurance and didn’t think about it again. Both sides signed the contract right away.
“You are so pretty and smart. Ryder must have been blind to cheat on you. John looked at me closely and his voice had a hint of flirtation.
I said, “Well, clearly not every Alpha knows how to appreciate things the way you do.”
A marriage made an alliance stronger than any contract. Since I left Ryder and went back to the Iceclaw pack, many Alphas from different packs had asked me to be their mate. But I didn’t want to go through another nightmare.
As I got ready to leave the conference room, John kept pushing me forward, staying close behind me.
“Hey, Zoe. John said, “If you’re thinking about starting a new relationship, I’m definitely the best choice.”
“Oh? And why is that?”
“I’ll make you my Luna.” The Starhollow pack has always been a big pack in the south. My brother, who was the last Alpha, had died, but he had a pup. Our pack will always have an heir, even if you can’t have pup in the future.
John spoke with confidence, sure that no she-wolf would turn down his offer, especially one who had trouble getting pregnant. “To be honest, being Luna doesn’t sound very appealing to me,” I said in a mocking tone.
The title of Luna and the role of Beta didn’t mean anything to me without love. They were just positions in the pack.
I laughed a little and left the conference room.
“Dad, we’ve signed the deal with the Starhollow pack.” We will now start working together.
When I gave my dad the contract, I saw the teasing smile on his face.
“Alpha John seems to like you,” I heard. Are you going to start dating again soon?”
“No way.” For now, I just want to be a great Beta.
I firmly denied it. After telling my dad about the collaboration, I quickly left his office while he laughed.
Dad thought that starting a new relationship was the best way to get over a failed marriage.
“Beta Zoe, maybe you can do your job as the host and show me around your pack?””
John was standing right outside my dad’s office. He looked at me with his silver eyes and told me to do my job as Beta.
“Fine,” I said angrily.
I couldn’t say no to him because it would be rude.
“Zoe, don’t you think it’s a shame that someone with your skills is still in the Beta position?””John was right behind me, his voice low and full of temptation.
“Why would it be a shame that you are the Alpha’s best assistant?”I asked.
“But you could lead the pack with the Alpha as Luna. I believe you would be an even better leader.
John spoke in a way that made me want to be his Luna. It was clear from every word he said that he was trying to get me to do it. I could see that the distance between us was getting smaller. His attitude was unexpectedly gentle but firm.
