The Marriage That Shouldn’t Have Been – Chapter 19

Found

Jay felt numb as he walked to the car with the police.

A number of reporters, who looked like they had acquired the tip from somehow, were taking pictures of him being hauled away.  The story made the front page the same day.

Jay stayed remarkably calm while being questioned.  The cops couldn’t arrest him without good proof.

Frank told Jay about what had happened since he had last seen him when he came to pick him up.

But Jay’s thoughts was only on what the master monk had said.

He tiredly stroked his temple and said, “Kyra had a niece she was close to, right?”

Frank gazed at him in shock for a while before reluctantly nodding.

“Get everything ready. Have her come to the office and get the paperwork for the stock transfer ready.”

“Mr. Grant, are you really going to give Spark Corporation to her? Are you sure about this? We’re almost completely focused on it right now!”

Jay would be cutting off a key portion of his business if he did that!

“Just do it,” Jay replied plainly.  “Have you found Tera yet?”

His voice was scratchy, a touch of optimism in his eyes.

Frank lowered his sight.   “No, we can’t find any travel records for her. She’s probably still in Eastwood.”

“Keep looking!” Jay urged.

He was too fatigued to say another word, and he gently closed his bloodshot eyes.

The news that Jay was preparing to restore Spark Corporation to the Spark family reached the Grant family swiftly, sparking an uproar.

They all admonished him, implying that the news of his imprisonment had already put the Grant family in peril.

Jay’s ears rang with their furious voices.

“Just wait, this bad son will bring down the Grant family!”

“We should have known—”

Jay gently raised his head.

“What should I have done?”

His voice was cold and piercing, and it pierced through the air.

The individual who had just spoken stopped right away, as if their voice had been taken away.  They shrank back behind the others, their eyes flashing with fright.

Jay laughed coldly when he saw this.

“What’s wrong? You don’t have the guts to say it now? You wish you hadn’t brought that child back?”

Everyone in the Grant family seemed to know about his father’s illegitimate son, except for him.

When Jay had lost his sight in that automobile accident, it didn’t take long for them to start conspiring, trying to force him to stand down.   Those folks would have undoubtedly ripped him apart a long time ago if Kyra hadn’t taken such wonderful care of him and stood by his side through it all.

The notion produced a tight knot in his chest, and the agony was acute and too much to handle.

Everyone’s eyes got bigger as the room fell silent, evidently startled that Jay knew.

Jay’s face become even colder, and his eyes were hard and cruel.

“I won’t hand Spark Corporation over to any of you from this family. In fact, I’m kicking all of you out, like the parasites you are!”

He kicked them out of the building and then took back everything they had been stealing from the Grant family for years.  He also told Frank to raise the amount of money that would be given as a prize.

Frank didn’t have much hope at first.  But one night, to his astonishment, he got a picture of crimson ropes that had been cut into pieces.  It looked just like what Jay had said it would.

He didn’t think twice before making the call.

But when he noticed that the other person wasn’t happy with the enormous amount of money, he offered even more of his own, but she still wouldn’t give it to him.

“Miss, what do you really want?”

The woman on the other end laughed coldly and suddenly, and then she asked for something.

“I want Jay to give himself up.”

Frank burst into a cold sweat.   He could see that the woman on the other end of the queue was the one Jay had been looking for.

He quickly called Jay and told him everything.  After a long gap on the line, Jay remained mute.

“M-Mr. Grant?”

Frank got up the guts to speak again when he saw that Jay still hadn’t answered.  “Mr Grant, stop thinking about whether the picture is real or not. You can’t just fall for it! This person is clearly after you!”

Frank could barely hear the breathing on the other end of the queue.

“Mr. Grant?”

Jay’s voice was calm and slow.  “Tell me her phone number.”

“I’ve already checked. She called from someone else’s phone.”

“Okay.”

Jay put his arms around Kyra’s picture and held it close to his chest after he hung up.

People kept assuring him that time heals all wounds and that he merely felt bad about Kyra. They said he will be able to let it go with time.

He thought for a moment that maybe it was just guilt.

They had known each other for years and had fought and bickered for a long time.  She had also been his wife, even if it was just in name.

But as days went, he didn’t forget her.   Instead, he simply remembered their time together more and more, and it stung more deeply with each passing day.

He understood then that real love didn’t go away with time.

If anything, it got deeper.

Those memories were so strong that they became part of him.  They made him go through them again and over again, like he was torturing himself, to remember and never forget.

He didn’t need to say anything to show how much he loved Kyra.
