The Marriage That Shouldn’t Have Been – Chapter 6

Protect he

This was the first time Kyra and Jay had gone shopping together. It was also the first time they felt like a normal married couple.

Jay pushed the cart while Kyra stood next to him and told him what to get. When they got to the register, Kyra stood calmly next to him.

A kid ran by her and almost hit her.

Jay quickly drew her behind him to protect her.

At that time, his hand held hers securely.

Kyra looked down at their tightly clasped hands, and her eyes started to blur with tears again.

Jay had only held her hand by himself once before. But before she could feel the warmth of his palm, he let go right away.

Then she went back to their home with him.

There weren’t many memories in the house for them. Jay had to marry her, and since then, he had fought back in every way he could.

That was simply the tip of the iceberg; he had 99 affairs.

Jay went straight to the kitchen after changing his shoes. Kyra had been holding it together until then, but as soon as he turned away, she let out a breath and slumped down on the floor.

When he walked back out, she had already put her mask back on. She sat there calmly and watched him serve the dinner as if nothing had occurred.

She didn’t even realise Jay could make food.

A man who was haughty and untouchable had learnt to cook for a woman.

Jay must genuinely care about Jenna.

“Why is there so much food?”  Kyra frowned as he kept bringing food out and stated, “It’s just the two of us, and I don’t think we can finish this.”

There was no way she could eat so much with her figure like this. She was afraid that one more bite would give her away.

Jay put down the last plate and looked relaxed.

“Who said it’s only the two of us? ”

Kyra was shocked and glanced at him.

The doorbell rang before she could do anything.

Jay grinned and stepped over to open the door the following second.

“Jay, are I late?  It’s the students’ fault; they wouldn’t stop asking me questions! ”

Jenna walked in like she owned the place and took a pair of women’s slippers out of the shoe cupboard.

Kyra remembered those slippers. She had just bought them and never got to use them before she moved out.

Jenna’s whole body shook as she saw how well she knew the house.

“Not late; just right.”  “Go wash your hands; the food is ready,” Jay murmured softly, but Kyra’s ears hurt.

Jenna smiled shyly and walked over to the table.

“Ms.  Sorry I’m late, Spark! ”

Kyra didn’t answer, but Jenna wasn’t expecting one. She went directly to the chair and sat down.

“Jay, you’re so nice to me. You even set out my plate and cutlery.”

“I know you’re a neat freak.”  I cleaned them a few times just so you could look at them! ”

“Then what kind of prize do you want? ”

Jay stretched out and pinched her face. “I want you to eat well.”  You’ve been working too hard at school, and now you’re sick on top of that.  “Look how thin you’ve gotten.”

Kyra saw the two of them conversing to each other as if no one else was present.

It felt like her heart, which had been dead for a long time, was beating anew.

She couldn’t help but cut in and say, “Jay, this is the last thing you said you’d do for me?” ”

She felt like someone had dumped a pail of freezing water on her.

He finally saw something when Jay stared at her.

When did Kyra lose so much weight?

There was a flash of guilt on his face, but his remarks were still icy and strong. “I made all this food, and I know you can’t eat it all by yourself.”  Don’t forget that Jenna just came out of the hospital.  I’ve been looking after her this whole time.  You were the one who made me do this last thing now.  I couldn’t just leave her.

Jenna was sitting exactly across from her. The smug look in her eyes was like a slap, making fun of how stupid Kyra was.

Kyra suddenly felt quite exhausted.

She lost all of her strength, the last little she had been hanging on to. Her heart hurt, and so did every bone in her body.

For just a second, her head lowered.

She made herself stand up the following second.

But she never took her eyes off the floor.

“I should never have thought you would do anything, Jay.”

Her voice was faint—so soft that it was hard to hear, like the sound of a pin dropping to the floor.

Jay’s feet twitched a little as he watched her getting ready to depart. But before he could do anything, Jenna walked past him.

She stretched out to grasp Kyra, but her sleeve became stuck in Kyra’s wig.

In a flash, the wig was pulled off.

“Kyra!” Jay gasped.  Where is your hair? ”

Kyra’s back was to him, and her hand started to shake a lot.

She couldn’t think. Jenna had taken away the last bit of her dignity.

Jenna snatched up the wig off the floor just as Kyra was ready to give up and tell Jay the truth.

She glanced at Kyra with a serious look on her face and remarked in a stern, accusing voice, “Ms.  I never thought you’d go this far, Spark.  You cut your hair solely to keep Jay with you?

“Don’t tell me you’re going to become a nun just to make him feel bad about leaving you after those five things!”

When Jay heard that, the horror in his eyes went away right away.
