The Marriage That Shouldn’t Have Been – Epilogue

Epilogue

He knew what Tera wanted: she wanted to damage his life and reputation.

He would give it to her if that was all!

He would do anything to get back the red thread Kyra had given him.

On the same day, news surfaced that Jay had turned himself in, along with video of him identifying the body.

He went through the whole thing like a robot.

The Grant family really despised him.  They might take his position now that he was gone.  As soon as the news got out, they paid for extra coverage because they wanted the story to spread as quickly as possible.

Jay’s face was icy and distant the whole time, except for that one time when he finally voiced his single request.  That was the only time he showed any real emotion on his face.

“I’ve kept my promise. What about you, Tera?”

Tera was already on her way to Eastwood City when she saw the news.

Jay wouldn’t see anyone but her.

Tera’s face contorted into an expression of pure derision as she heard that.  She looked straight at the man in front of her.

Jay’s face was tired and worn down, like a shadow of the strong man he used to be.

Tera felt a sick feeling of satisfaction when she saw how Jay was doing.

She would have snapped a picture to give to Kyra at her burial if there hadn’t been a no-photo restriction.

Jay licked his chapped lips as he watched her.

“What’s the red string?”

Tera didn’t answer.  Instead, she bent down and took a notebook out of her bag.

Jay’s gaze never left her hands.

She held the notebook up to the glass wall.

“What’s this?” Jay said, bewildered.

He was seeking for the red string.

Tera didn’t say anything; she just opened the notebook and handed it out for him to see.

Jay’s eyes widened in amazement when he realised what was within.

There was uneven, untidy handwriting on every page and every line.

Jay’s lips wouldn’t stop shaking, even though Tera didn’t say anything.

Tera spoke softly after a lengthy silence.

“Jay, Kyra didn’t even write the first letter you got. You wouldn’t have known how much pain she was in or how much she was suffering. But she still wrote these words and tried so hard to finish them. She wanted to do ten things with you, but you said that was too many. You said five, and that’s all you’d agree to. The rest she wrote in this notebook. The letters you saw were just my copy of them.”

Jay was so shocked that he couldn’t stop looking at Tera’s face. His tears started to fall without him knowing it.

“Was she hurt when she left?”

Tera didn’t say anything.  She didn’t say anything and just observed him.

She bowed her head and flipped over the pages after a long time.

Then she held the notebook up in front of Jay again.

There was only one queue in front of him, and it was as clean as Kyra could make it.

[If I ever get the chance, I want to come here with Jay.]

Jay thought his heart had broken open and was bleeding out with no end in sight.  He fully lost it and hit his own head with his fists.

“I love her! Kyra! I love her!”

Jay cried like a child who would never get candy again.  People who looked at him would think he really loved Kyra since his eyes were full of confusion and helplessness.

But Tera stared at him for a long time before bursting out laughing.

“Jay, do you really love Kyra?”

He nodded, and his face was full of pain.  He was in love with her.  Why had it taken him so long to understand how much he loved Kyra?  What made him so dumb?  Why had he continually hurting the woman he loved the most?

He didn’t even get to see her again!

“Jay, you’re wrong. You don’t really love Kyra.”

“That’s impossible! How could you know how much I love her? You don’t understand!” Jay shouted at Tera, his voice filled with wrath.

“Why didn’t you come to me back then? Why did you just call me? You made me miss the chance to see her one last time!”

Tera just smirked at his outburst.

“You say you love Kyra, but you didn’t even know that the words on the confession wall weren’t hers. They were mine. The picture of the back view? That wasn’t Kyra’s. That was me.

“Your love is shallow, ignorant, and selfish.”  You didn’t deserve the love she offered you.

Tera didn’t say anything else and just walked away.

Jay stared at her as she walked away, his eyes wide in disbelief. For what felt like an eternity, he couldn’t move or think.

The police eventually found Jenna’s body in pieces. The Scot family wanted to get money from the Grant family, so they streamed their sob story live. They also often posted pictures of their daughter’s supposed abuse online. The Grant family, on the other hand, was focused on staying away from Jay.

People were quite interested in the fight between the two families, but no one wanted to keep supporting their enterprises.

Jay’s punishment was rapidly carried out. He didn’t fight it. Instead, he spent every day like a soulless shell, waiting for the day he would die.

He even had a peculiar feeling of excitement about the idea of seeing Kyra on the other side.

He could hardly wait.

Tera went back to Kyra’s grave and brought a lot of the meals Kyra loved but couldn’t eat anymore.

She smiled as she cleaned the picture on the headstone.

“Kyra, Grandma thinks you’ve been reborn into a good family.   This time, you have parents who love you and a sibling who’ll always defend you.   You will have a good existence.

“You’ll never see Jay again, just as you wanted.”
